In the beginning when first reading this book,I didn't actually like it.I didn't like it because it really didn't make much since. The book,in the beginning portrayed woman as weak and as vulnerable to a mans power, however now I understand this so much more, and I actually really like the book now.Towards the end I saw how all of this helped move the plot along. This show of weakness helped fuel the plot to an amazing ending, and it helped develop Mariam and Laila as characters, and it helped show how,in the end they were strong, and I think their triumph in the end,was both of their coming of age moments, where they rose above the abuse and torment they both suffered through, and they prevailed in the end, with Mariam dying a fulfilled woman, and Laila going on to live the life she had wanted since adolescence.
