      - This is a quote that most relates to the culture represented in the book.This quote shows Nana warning Mariam about how women are treated in this society,and it actually has foreshadowing in it.Mariam does not listen to her mother,but after her mothers death,her father forces her to marry a man at least 30 years older than her,and she cannot refuse.This marriage also shows her how right her mother was,and how she should have listened to her mothers wise words.
      - This quote in my opinion has a deeper meaning than just how her mother cut the umbilical cord when Mariam was born.This is a quote that can also relate to the relationship between her and her mom.This shows how the bond between them was broken and how they have grown distant because of the strict way her mother raised her,and the way her mother tried to teach her about the women culture.

      - This quote shows how,in many societies,a male heir is wanted in the family,and how a female is discarded and not wanted by the parents.In many societies,such as this one,a man holds more power than a woman.In these societies a male heir is wanted,so that the family name can be carried on.If a girl is born,the name of the family begins to disappear,because a woman does not get the same rights as men.But when a man is born,the family name is carried on,and he gets many rights,that women don't have.
