A Thousand Splendid Suns
CHAPTERS 1-10
Quotes
"Where i come from, one wrong look, one improper word, and blood is spilled."(10:71)
"'No.No,' she said.'Don't come. I wont see you. Don't you come. I don't want to hear from you. Ever.'" (8:55)

Reflections
I think that Mariam when Mariam lost her mother, she also lost her father too. She saw through his lies and lost her sense of innocence for the world around her. She feels alone because she is cut off from her friends and family and she cannot confide in her husband because of the threats he made. If she were to share how she felt, he made it sound like he would kill her.

CHAPTERS 11-20
Quotes
"Mariam didn't mind. In truth, she was even flattered. Rasheed saw sanctity in what they had together. Her honor was something worth guarding to him. She felt prized by his protectiveness. Treasured and significant" (Chap 12, pg 81).
" ' You know nothing, do you? You're like a child. Your brain is empty. There is no information in it.'
'I ask because-'
'Shut up.'
Mariam did. (chap 15,pg 98)
Rasheed was drumming his gloved fingers and humming a song. Everytime the bus bucked iver a pothole and jerked forward, his hand shot protectively over her belly." (chap 13, pg 86)
Questions
-
Do you think that if Miriam was able to have kids, Rasheed would have been kinder to her, or was his abusive nature inevitable?
-
Reflections
I think it's interesting how at the beginning of their marriage, Rasheed is kind and gentle, and how later on he's abusive towards her. I think this is because he is now resentful towards Mariam because she cant have kids, and isn't a very good cook. I think that Mariam will eventually snap and kill Rasheed using the gun she found.
CHAPTERS 21-30
Quotes
"There would come a day, in fact, years later, when Laila would no longer bewail his loss... the details of his face would slip from her memory" (Hosseini, 187.
"The ground lurched beneath her feet. Something hot and powerful slammed into her from behind" (Hosseini, 192).
"On the whole, Mariam thought that that hr had weathered the years considerably better than she" (Hosseini, 214).
Reflections
I think that if she had left with Tariq, the guilt of leaving her father would have burdened her the whole way. I think that Laila was manipulated into accepting Rasheed's proposal. He mentioned the horrors that could happen to her if she didn't stay with him.

CHAPTERS 31-40
Quotes
"Her war was against Rasheed. The baby was blameless" (Hosseini, 284).
"Mariam knew that she and Laila had become one and the same being to him, equally wretched, equally deserving of his distrust, his disdain and disregard" (Hosseini, 274).
"Everywhere she looked, Laila saw Rasheed. She spotted him coming out of barbershops... She sank lower in her seat" (Hosseini, 258).
Reflections
Its interesting to see how Rasheed is somewhat kind to laila throughout the beginning of their marriage, but when she has aziza he is horrible to her. I thought he was going to kill Laila when she tried to escape. I wonder if he locked mariam away too.

If Tariq wasn't dead and came back to see Laila married to Rasheed, do you think he would be upset or understand
CHAPTERS 41-51
Questions
-
What if mariam had not killed rasheed. How different would this story be. Would he have killed aziza?
-
Quotes
"For the first time that day, Mariam cried a little" (Hosseini, 369).
"He fished a stick of gum from his pocket... and held is out to Aziza" (Hosseini, 314).
"' I held a shard of glass to his throat and took his blanket from him. I gave it to my mother'" (Hosseini,335).
Reflections
Overall, I really liked this book. I wouldn't consider the ending happy, but it is satisfying. I think its interesting how different Lailas marriages are, and how zalami came to know Tariq as his father. I really loved that Laila is going to name her daughter Mariam.

Reflection
II thought it was interesting how we see Mariam go from abusive relationships throughout the book and that she thought that was normal. Once Laile came into her life Mariam had something good to live for. Someone in my group said that Laila was the daughter Mariam never had while Mariam was the mother Laila never had. I really liked that it was not a coming of age story but a growing of society story. We go from the good to the bad to the okay. Id says it wasn't a happy ending but an overall satisfying one.
Questions
If Mariams mom had not killed herself would she have had a better or worse life comrade to her life with Rasheed?
