This book was a very bitter-sweet interpretation of real life events before, during, and after the Taliban's reign. The story gives us a perspective of two completely different women of different backgrounds, who end up having their daily struggles as a common ground for them both. This story could be seen as a tragedy from Mariam's perspective and a victory story from Laila's perspective. Mariam honestly had nothing from the beginning and saw nothing in herself that was worthy, as all of those around her either told or showed her they didn't see her as anything, but later she realizes she is worth something, but she's not able to be free of this burden in life, as she dies almost soon after. Laila however had (somewhat) of a family, besides her neglective mother, that loved and supported her along with her friend Tariq, and although she had her harships along with Mariam, everything works out for her in the end, as she has her children, Tariq, and a stable career and home safe. Even though both of these girls shared the same struggles with Rasheed and with the Taliban's rule in general, they both had very different beginnings and ending
