Final Thoughts
Quotes
Chapter 1
"Like a compass needle that points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman. Always.
(Hosseini 7)
Throughout the book men never have to take responsibility for the pain they cause woman. Woman are always seen as less than men and are the first to be accused and punished.
Chapter 16
"You can be anything you want, Laila. And I also know that when this war is over, Afghanistan is going to need you as much as its men, maybe even more. Because a society has no chance at success if its woman are uneducated, Laila."
(Hosseini 114)
Laila was a very educated girl because of her father and her knowledge helped her to survive. When the war was over in Kabul, Laila moved back and started teaching the children in the orphanage. She contributed to society just like her father had predicted.
Chapter 51 "But, mostly, Marium is in Laila's own heart, where she shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand splendid suns." (Hosseini 414)
This is one of Laila's final thoughts about Marium. Marium became such an important person in Laila's life. She was like a mother to her and a grandmother to her children. She will always remember her as her best friend.

A Thousand Splendid Suns was an amazing story. It makes you think about how grateful we should be for the amazing, privileged life we get to live. While I was reading, I really realized how fortunate I am to not have to experience what Laila and Marium had to go through. I really enjoyed reading it and kept wanting to read more. I hope I can find more books like it that can open up my mind like A Thousand Splendid Suns did.
