Identitites
Stage 2 the individual is in the middle not fulling integrated with the deaf community or the hearing community this is viewed as marginal
Stage 3 the individual begin to become interested in the deaf community and then would start to reject the hearing community
The first stage for deaf identity is focused around viewing deafness as a disease that is a medical problem attempting to rectify it by looking into option that include cochlear implants or hearing aids
When considering the deaf community the same stages of identity would occur. For example, stage one conforming to the larger society, which would be the hearing community. The individual would try to behave as if they are no longer deaf and are fully integrated within the hearing community.
The last stage the individual becomes fully integrated within the deaf community where they feel secure and can see the viewpoints from both cultures
Racial identity
The six stages start out with conforming to the majority society, practicing the larger society beliefs, then progressing to understanding that those beliefs are not related to their own cultural identity. Thus, the individual will then start supporting their cultural identity, instead of the larger majority culture
The racial identity stages focus on how an individual gains confidence in their own identity, so that they can be accepting of other cultures.
Individuals within the community that experience oppression often experience one of the six stages of identity development.
The racial identity stages focus on individuals that have experience oppression and how they overcome their negative identity beliefs to positive identity beliefs.
