A Thousand Splendid Suns
Chapters 1-10
quote 2, chapter 2, page 15
"You know I love you Marium Jo,"
reflection
This quote contradicts quote 1. This quote shows that Nana actually does have a strong love for Marium, she just has a different way of showing it.
quote 3, chapter 3, page 17
"God's words will never betray you."
reflection
This quote really gives us an overall perspective of the Muslim religion. The people of this religion feel as though their God will never betray them, it shows just how much they love him no matter what.
quote 1, chapter 1, page 4 "Jalil never called Marium this name. Jalil said she was his little flower"
reflection
This quote demonstrates how differently Nana and Jalil speak of Marium. For example, Jalil says that he thinks of her as his little flower while Nana calls her a herami, or bastard

question 1(character)
Why do you think it is such a burden to be a child of parents who are not married?
-
Chapters 11-20
-
question 3 (culture)
How would the outcome of the miscarriage be different if they were not of the Muslim religion?
-
quote 1, chapter, page 88
"She thought of what was growing there, and happiness rushed in like a gust of wind blowing a door wide open."
quote 2, chapter , page 144
"... Mammy's heart was like a pallid beach where Laila's footprints would forever wash away beneath the waves of sorrow that swelled and crashed"
reflection 2
This quotes comes with a feeling of sadness and despair because Laila feels as though her own mother does not love her. She feels like her mother's love is preoccupied by her brothers and that is a sad thought to have.
quote 3, chapter , page 93
"Some days, she believed that the baby had been an undeserved blessing, that she was being punished for what she had done for Nana. wasn't it true that she might as well have slipped that noose around her mother's neck herself,"
reflection 3
This quote is also very sad because Marium already thinks that her Mother's suicide is her fault. And now that her baby has died, she feels as though it is a punishment for that and no mother or daughter should feel that way.
Chapters 21-30

After having several encounters with love, how do you think the conception of love is evolving throughout the book? (theme)
quote 3, Hossieni 157
"She sensed that Tariq was observing her- one eye on the kiss, the other on her- as she was observing him."
I really like this quote because it shows that there still is beauty in love. After all the tragedies in the beginning of the book, it kind of gives a negative connotation but this quote really juxtaposes that.
quote 2, Hossieni 155
"He's their puppet, they'll keep the war going through him, you can bet on that."
This quote shows how strongly mammy is in her beliefs. It also shows that she is really upset about the war and what it did to her son.
quote 1, hossieni 149
"But we're like those walls up there. Battered and nothing pretty to look at, but still standing"
This quote really shows a good depiction of Afghanistan. The book compares it to a wall claiming that there is really nothing special about it, however it is still there.

Hosseini 253
"Rasheed said civilians were getting killed daily, by the dozens."
This quote really showed me how real this war is. People every single day are losing people so close to them to this war and that saddens me.
-
Chapters 41-51
quote 3 Hosseini 348
"Yet as she closed her eyes, it was not regret any longer but a sensation of abundant peace that washed over her."
This quote is sad because I did not want Marium to die. However, I am glad for her that she passed with good intentions Although she is gone, she left with good will.
quote 2 Hosseini 348
"He'd taken so much from her in twenty seven years of marriage, she would not watch him take Laila too."
This quote shows how much Marium has grown throughout the book. At first she hated Laila but she now is willing to sacrifice herlife to save Laila's.
quote 1 Hosseini 337
"'AND YOU DIDN'T LIE TO ME?' Rasheed roared. 'You think I didn't figure it out? About your herami? You take me for a fool, you whore.'"
This quote made me very surprised because if rasheed knew that Aziza wasn't his child, why didn't he say anything earlier? But this does explain why he treated her so badly.
Final Thoughts
Reflection
Overall, this book taught me the vast difference between cultures and religions. I was not aware of the major effect the Muslim religion had on people. their wrongs and rights are drastically different from those of the Christian faith. It amazes me how serious the consequences are for their mistakes, rather than ours. This book really opened my eyes up.

reflection 1
This quote showed how amazing it was for Marium to become a mother. Because her mother was not the best mother to her, she now has a chance top be the mother that hers was not.
