This particular quote is significant because this is the first time that Mariam expresses that she is hurt. This whole time she's had such a positive outlook on her father but now that she realizes that she's been nothing to him she is ashamed.

This quote gives an introduction into what type of husband Rasheed is going to be towards Mariam. It makes you feel for Mariam because of how poorly her life is going.

She still thinks about her mom and will always be influenced by her words she remembers. This is important because she considers this a significant moment.

She is still going along even though throughout the time we have known her she has not been very outgoing and a good mother to Laila. She does have good intentions at heart she's just upset.

throughout this section the author starts to say this a lot. whatever she feels the most connected to or she remembers most is what she remembers you by no matter who you are.

this shows that she still, six months later, is not showing any positive emotion of the death of her sons and the celebration of the people who killed them being gone.
