How do we identify and accommodate students with special needs at my school?
Behavior
Does the student struggle to focus in class and disrupt the learning environment?
Academic level in class
Create behavior plans for the student. Meet with the parents to discuss the behavior plan and ways they can help at home.
Is it suspected to be due to very low language level?
complete a document of strategies used and provide evidence of the student's struggle related to language.
submit that to the ESL teacher who will then come in and conduct an observation and an assessment is done to confirm if it’s related to language or something else
If it's due to language level
The ESL teacher would be pushed in to help the student in class or the student would be pulled out for short period of time.
Could it be due to other circumstances?
complete a document of strategies used and provide evidence of the student's struggle related to behavior.
Meet with the principal and parents to discuss the student's situation and find out if the student has a particular diagnosed disability or need. Discuss options to accommodate/Refer parents to a specialist for the student if necessary.
If it's confirmed that the student has a diagnosed disability or need, create or adjust behavior plans to better meet the needs of the student.

Does the student find the content too challenging?
Differentiate
For students below level, simplify the lesson to meet the pace of the student while ensuring they are reaching their weekly goals.
Consider learning style when adjusting the lesson.
Provide assessment to track progress and see where the lessons need to be adjusted.
For students above level, provide enrichment activities to keep them challenged and thinking deeper on the content being taught.
Meet with parents and suggest after school tutoring
Does the student find the content too easy?
Physical needs
Meet with parents to discuss what's being done to meet physical needs of the student both at home and at school.
Refer parents to a specialist if needed.
Adjust lesson structure to accommodate the student's mobility. Provide tools that aid the student in posture and movement if necessary.
