Integumentary System
EPIDERMIS
Stratum Corneum
1.The outermost layer of the Epidermis, consists of dead cells. Mainly Keratin
- It serves as the primary barrier between the body and the environment.
Stratum Lucidum
consist of two or three rows of dead keratinocytes that are clear and flat. The keratohyalin substance granules cling to keratin filaments in cells, making them aggregate in parallel arrays of intermediate filaments called tonofilaments
Stratum Granulosum
- It is a layer of dying cells in the upper part of the epidermis, between the thick layer of keratinocytes below it and the compressed dead cells of the stratum corneum above, on the very surface of the skin.
2.Accumulate dense basophilic keratohyalin granules. These granules contain lipids, which along with the desmosomal connections, help to form a waterproof barrier that functions to prevent fluid loss from the body.
Stratum Spinosum
- Prickle cell layer located between the Stratum Granulosum and Stratum Basale
- Spiny appearance due to the protruding cell processes that join the cells via a structure called a desmosome. The desmosomes interlock with each other and strengthen the bond between the cells.
