WEATHER
-
2.cold air is dense and is therefore heavy.because it is heavy presses down on the earth.this causes high pressure.
-
3.warm air is not dense and therefore is light.because it is light it rises up from the earth. this causes low pressure
-
-
1.At the equator, hot air rises. this creates a zone or belt of low pressure (LP) across the world
-
- when the warm air has risen it begins to move away from the equator. as it does so it begins to cool
-
3.by the time it reaches Latitude 30° the air is cool and heavy .it presses down creating a zone of high pressure (HP)
-
4.surface winds blow outwards from the high pressure zone. some move towards how pressure at the equator. some move northwards
-
- very cold air at the north pole is heavy and presses down. this forms an area of high pressure. winds blow outwards from this high pressure
-
- at about latitude 60°,warm winds from the south meet cold winds from the north pole.the warm air rises, creating a zone of low pressure. this sets up another wind system.
- you will notice in figure 5 that our global winds move in 'slanted' patterns from belt of low pressure. This happens because the earths rotates on its axis from west to east. The west-east cast rotations causes winds in the northren hemipshere to move to the right and winds in southern hemisphere to move to the left. This is known as Coriolis force. The unequal heating of our atmosphere and coriolis force combine together to give the global wind patterns which are shown in figure 5
