omnivore's paradox:
We are flexible, but cautious species.
Attraction to new, but preference for familiar
ability to use a wide range of edible foods over all of the climes of the world put humans at an advantage
ie pastoralist in africa: blood and milk or Irish: potatoes and milk
we survive on diff combos
we conserve safe food choices within a culture through ritual
we avoid poisoning ourselves on a new, toxic food through a general caution
why Food Culture exists? :
we learn what's best in our envir, best practices, w don't relearn ancestors mistakes
trial and error

food is more to humans than just nutrient

socializing and commercial exchange
utensils, friges, napkins, trucks
distinguished class, religion, nationhood
shared, stolen, withheld ie Korea
it can be abstained : hunger test, hunger strike
offered to deceased realties or scarified to gods
misc: form of punishment, competition, language, choices reflect what we value, judge other based on food choices
