ICT
Networking is a group of computers and other peripheral devices linked together to share hardware resources
-
Components
-
-
Modem
enables comps to connect to internet
it Modulates digital signals to analog signals to send and visa versa to receive
use
-
- Central connection for all comps
Types of Networks
-
LAN(Local Area Network)
- 2+ comps
- Small area- building, campus
- Physically connected(wires)
- Slow speed
- 1 administrator
-
WAN ( Wide AreaNetwork)
- 2+ comps located far away
- linked using satellite signal
- eg. telecom system- popular
- requires public communication
- large organisation & govt
Architecture
Client server
- several comps - clients
- main comp - server
Peer to peer
- Few comps- equal capabilities, use. same resources
- No server/ client
Topology
Point to point
- simplest form of network
- 2 nodes connected to each other
- suitable for small area
Bus
- Uses single communication line
- main cable acts as backbone
- transmits data in 1 direction
- provides data to all comps
- used for small network bcos if main cable fails network = X
Star
- each device connected to main comp using point to point connection
- central comp= hub
- popular as cost is low & setup is easy
Ring
- All nodes connected in a O manner
- Data travels via all nodes till reaches final destination
- used in LAN + WAN
- if one comp goes down whole network gets affected
- slow
Tree
- Common
- Many star networks put together
- A failure of wire won't affect the Network
- Hard maintenance
Mesh
- Each node connected to every node
- Handle large amt of data
- Common - wirleless
- high cost
