How to drive a stick shift/manual
what (I think) I know
When you are shifting gears you must push the clutch in and let off of the gas
if you let off of the clutch while you are in gear and are giving no gas you will stall out
If you are in neutral you do not have to push the clutch in
you cannot push in the clutch and gas at the same time because when you push the clutch in you are not in a gear and that therefore counter reacts the gas, because it has nothing to pull and it will make a very loud revving noise.
When starting up the car you must push the clutch in
when parking you need to pull the emergency brake up
When you are parking you should leave your car in gear because it will better secure your car from rolling
When a stick shift is in neutral the gas will not help move the car at all it must be in gear.
To get the car to go you must let off the clutch at the same time as you push in the gas. You have to do this simultaneously or the car will stall
When you are parked it is safer to leave your car in gear and have your emergency brake on. When you have your car in gear it will not be able to roll but if it is in neutral it would be able to move. The emergency brake is great but you shouldn't fully trust it.
What I need to know
how do the gears change
A transmission is connected to an engine through the clutch. The clutch allows the transmission and engine to separate or connect. Pushing the clutch down will cause a disconnect. All gears are on what is called a layshaft. The layshaft gets all of its power from the engine when the clutch becomes engaged. So when you are hifting gears and hear an awful grinding noise it is because the dog teeth are trying to engage in the holes to be able to excel.

what is the rpm and how does it help you while driving a manual
Starting off,. every car has a maximum rpm value the car cannot exceed without exploding. Rpm is the rotations per minute around the axis. It measures the speed of the machine at any given time.

With cars who have rpm meters a good tip is to know when the rpm is around 3 then you should shift up a gear. When the rpm is around 1 you should know to shift down.
about the shift from manuals to automatics
Automatic cars are what a lot of people in the world have shifted to. The first automatic transmission was released in 1940. The most common found in cars is the hydraulic planetary. These types of transmissions are able to shift gears by hydraulically locking and unlocking a system of planetary gears. Unlike a manual these transmissions are able to keep the car from rolling forwards or backwards.

how does a manuals transmission run
The cars engine creates power for rotation. For movement to occur the rotational power must be moved to the wheels.

history of manuals
The overall purpose of the manual is to create more power through the engine. Torque is what gives a car power and to build that power it either has to be done manually or automatically. The first manual car was built in 1894 by French inventors named Louis-Rene Panhard and Emilie Levassor. This first car was a three speed. By 1928 another copany had found a way to out do the French innovators by creating the Cadillac that had a synchronized manual transmission. This was able to allow cars to have less gear grinding and made for a smoother shift.

Basic function of the clutch
The function of a clutch is to disengage the engine from the wheels. The clutch causes you to be able to switch gears without grinding them.
Before changing gears the clutch must be pushed in

when driving a 5 speed...
Starting in neutral, first gear is over left and up. Second is straight down from first, and from neutral is it over left and down. From second, third is up and over right a little bit. From neutral third is straight up and forth is straight down. From neutral fifth gear is right and up, from fourth it is up and right. Reverse is over right and down.
