Integumentary System
Types of Burns:
First degree:
only epidermis is damaged
Erythma(redness) mild edema(swelling), surface layer shed
Heals in days or weeks
no scarring
Integument:
- The covering
- skin & accessory organs
- 2 square meters; 10/11 lbs.
- largest sense organ

Sensation: touch, vibration, pain, temperature.
Sweating: sweat covers skin surface & evaporates, carrying away heat.

destroys epidermis & upper dermis
forms blisters
*There are no scars or scarring if infected.

Cancer:

Basal: (cell carcinoma)
*Least malignant
- Most common type
- Arises from stratum basal
Squamous: (cell carcinoma)
*Arises from stratum spinosum
- Metastasizes to lymph nodes
- Early removal allows chance of cure
Malignant Melanoma:
- Most deadly in skin
- cancer of Melanocytes
- Metastatasizes rapidly to lymph & blood vessels.
Dermis:
connective tissue layer
- highly vascular; support avascular epidermis & regulates body temp.
- blood vessels sweat & oil glands, & nerve endings for senses.
Dermal papllary: tight connection, anchors epidermis to dermis and creates fingertips.
