Foreshadowing
“Stay on the Path. Don’t go off. I repeat. Don’t go off. For any reason!”
This quote represents the basic guidelines for time traveling. Since it is so stressed, we can infer that something will happen that includes this important rule.
Hyperbole
“Every hunter that ever lived would envy us today. This makes Africa seem like Illinois.”
This quote compares the difference of the Jurassic period and the present. It adds emphasis to the action of time traveling and seeing the world in a different light.
Personification
“The Machine slowed; its scream fell to a murmur.”
The personification in this quote gives more context as to how the time machine works and looks like. In this quote, it describes how the machine was shutting down after arriving in the past.
Indirect Characterization
“Eckels swayed on the padded seat, his face pale, his jaw stiff. He felt the trembling in his arms, and he looked down and found his hands tight on the new rifle.”
This quote is important because, even though Eckels chooses not to back out, he is still nervous and afraid to go back to the time of dinosaurs. This is important later on because his anxiety ends up being his downfall in the story.
Conflcit
““Go out on that Path alone,” said Travis. He had his rifle pointed. “You’re not coming back in Machine. We’re leaving you here!”
This quote emphasizes the significance of not messing with the past, the story’s theme. It also allows us to see the differences in personalities that contributed to Mr. Travis reprimanding Eckels this way.
Simile
“It was like standing by a wrecked locomotive or a steam shovel at quitting time, all valves being released or levered tight.”
This quotes creates a picture of what the scene of the T-rew dying looked like. It gives a detailed description of how its body was slowly shutting off after being killed- makes us feel like we are there
Direct Characterization
“It towered thirty feet above half of the trees [...]”
The use of this quote allows for a more exact image of the T-rex to form. It also lets readers have an idea of what the travelers are up against and how a T-rex looked like.
Symbolism
““Not a little thing like that! Not a butterfly!” cried Eckels.”
The quote directly states what the cause of the future’s change was. This way, we see how the butterfly represents how something small can create something big. It leads back to what Mr. Travis was saying about how changing even the smallest things in the past, determines the future’s outcome
Irony
“Just ran off the Path, that’s all, a little mud on my shoes- what do you want me to do- get down and pray?”
This quote embodies the situational irony in the story. The characters are not meant to step off the path but that is exactly what happens. By reading this quote, readers can assume the consequences and events that will occur later on in the story.
