2: JFK employs a grateful tone to establish trust with politicians from his home state (SAY IN INTRO HOME STATE IS MA) in order to convince the people of Massachusetts that the historical values of his state will be embodied through his administration.
possible quote 1: “[there are] historic qualities of the Bay Colony and the Bay state [that] this state has consistently sent to this chamber on Beacon Hill in Boston and to Capitol Hill back in Washington” (first paragraph 3rd page)
JFK directly references the fact that Massachusetts' history has been applied to help the White House's endeavors, and he plans to continue this.
"grateful tone"
"the people of Massachusetts to whom I am so deeply indebted for a lifetime of friendship and trust" (first paragraph).
addresses the audience as comrades instead of just people who live in the same state with lesser titles than him
"I have placed my confidence in the citizens of Massachusetts--and they have so generously responded by placing their confidence in me" (second paragraph).
He feels a sense of returned favors among his fellow Bay Staters, which compels him to hold MA in his heart when he leads the country
"no man about to enter high office in this country can ever be unmindful of the contribution this state has made to our national greatness" (6th paragraph).
"this state" meaning MA? Like every politician should be grateful for MA? or should be grateful for their home?
"They are an indelible part of my life, my convictions, my view of the past, and my hopes for the future" (10th paragraph).
"they" meaning all of the people that have made the history of Massachusetts so rich. These people from the past shaped him and his future. He's taking this history with him to his future in the White House

possible quote 2: "this song of Massachusetts hopes [these historical qualities] will characterize our government's conduct in the four stormy years that lay ahead" (3rd page 2nd paragraph)
he not only wants to bring the qualities of MA with him during his presidency, he wants them to be the roots for the way that he leads America.
"four stormy years" he speaks about leaving Massachusetts and going to the White House in a negative way. On the first page he describes the White House as the "high and lonely office" as if Massachusetts let him be personal, but now he is losing that to his Presidency. He emphasizes the great roots that MA has provided for him rather than the adventure he is embarking upon
SO WHAT??
JFK knew that Massachusetts' history was valuable and that it runs deep in his life and that he should take it with him to the White House. History has the power to change the future due to its mistakes and victories.
