Five Phases of diagnosing mental illness with validity
Clinical Description
This is the first step in the process of identifying all features that may relate to the individual’s mental disorder. Initial Assessment or Intake of Patient
Laboratory Studies
Second step involves gathering information which is more biological (measurable/objective) in nature.
Delimitation from Other Disorders
Physicians expertise along with other information collected in previous steps is used to determine the mental health diagnosis
Follow-up Study
Third step ensures the homogeneity of the group is still present. If homogeneity is not present then the criteria used in the first three steps have to be critiqued
Family Study
Relies on using family (heredity) or environmental factors to determine that a mental health disorder is present
Media
Postive
Help educate people on mental health and increase awareness on mental health issues
Destigmatize mental health
Connects the world to help those with mental health issues (e.g., Bell Talk, celebrities sharing their mental health issues, education on dealing with mental health)
Negative (especially in the past years, changing slowly now)
Display mental health as a supernatural phenomenon (e.g., ghosts and demons)
Portray those with mental health challenges as murders or homicidal
Over medicalization of mental health
I agree with Dr. Allen Frances views on the DSM 5
Profit making organizations are over exaggerating the classification of mental illness or disorders (e.g., feeling sad and lonely after a loved ones death are natural human emotions not symptoms are mental disorders as Dr. Allen clarifies)
Leading to over prescription of psychotic drugs and the use of these drugs
Profit for pharmaceutical companies and other profitable organization (e.g., medical institutions)
Distress (moduel 2 topic 3 mind map)
Bad
Causes Anxiety and Depression
Chronic
Disrupts homeostasis and health
Eustress (moduel 3 topic 3 mind map)
Good if short term
Enhance Function (e.g, physical and mental)
Strength Training keeps body strong and healthy
Challenging work keeps mind working hard and focused (makes one feel useful - personal opinion)
Mental Health Causes & Treatments
Holistic Treatment Approach (Paradigm Shift from biomedical model to more biopsychosocial model of treatment of mental health)
Importance of biopsychosocial model of mental health
Emphasizes the importance of a more holistic treatment for mental health issues. Shows phsychological, behavioral, and social aspects of an individual’s health need to be treated as well
Hermeneutics
"the idea of understanding the context in which an [individual] lives and through which particular experience has significance" - PAT BRACKEN
To help treat the individual mental health issues
The individual needs to be treated for physical and mental health equally
Trauma-informed mental health And social determinants of mental health
Adversity and traumatic events in childhood or in a individuals life what someone finds to be traumatic is subjective
For instance the conditions someone is born into (e.g., social inequality, and financial poor setting)
Adversity and traumatic events can effect a person emotional well-being or psyche (mind)
Resulting in state of mental well being distributed
