Causes of war with spain
The Netherlands
These actions annoyed Elizabeth's government, who decided to secretly help the protestants
They did this by allowing rebel ships safe passage in English ports, providing financial support to others fighting the Spanish, and encouraging privateers to attack Spanish colonies.
A campaign was launched by Duke of Alba to restore Catholicism, and many protestants were executed in 1568 by the council of troubles.
The Netherlands had been Spanish since the 1400's, although many Dutch people became protestant.
A lack of funding lead to Spanish troops being unpaid, leading to the Spanish fury, and the pacification of Ghent.
Drake & Piracy
Drake's attack on Cadiz: Since 1586 Spain had been building up the Armada, that was to invade England. In March 1587 Elizabeth ordered Drake to attack the navy, where he destroyed 30 ships and many of their supplies.

The attack on Cadiz delayed the Armada for over a year, and forced Spain to defend itself instead of build the Armada.
Commercial Rivalry
-
Spain had already conquered Mexico and Peru, giving them vast amounts of resources, while English sailors such as Drake sailed for long distances to different parts of the world.
Spain controlled major trade routes, as well as the new world, reducing the income from English traders.
English merchants funded by private investors raided Spanish colonies and ships from the new world. This lead to Spain's lack of financing for the war in the Netherlands.
Religious Rivalry
Under Mary I England & Spain had been allies, while with Elizabeth their relationship deteriorated.
Philip II saw Protestantism as a threat to Catholics, while English Protestants saw Catholics as a threat.
