CHAPTER 8: TYPES OF INDEXES
Alphabetical indexes
Based on the principles of letters of the alphabet and is used for arrangement of subject headings, cross-references and qualifying terms.
Author indexes
Author indexes are those whose entry points are people,organizations,corporate authors, and government agencies.
Book indexes
List of words,generally alphabetical, at the back of a book, giving a page location of the subject or name associated with each word.
Chain indexes
Type of precoordinated index that represents a chain of concepts that make up a subject.
Classified indexes
Its contents arranged systematically by classes or subject headings
Citation indexes
Consist of a list of documents with a sublist under each article of subsequently published documents that cite the documents.
Coordinated indexes
Allows terms to be combined or coordinated
Cumulative indexes
Combination or a merging of a set of indexes over time
Database indexes
Database index provides a mapping to needed data.
Major drawbacks with the alphabetical arrangement are the problems of synonyms and scattering of entries.
Faceted indexes
Any subject is not a single unit but has many aspects, thus a faceted index attempts to discover all the individual aspects of a subject and synthesize them in a way that best describes the subject under discussion.
First-line indexes
All the words in the first line of poem are listed in their alphabetical position in the index.
