- - - - GERMAIN GRISEZ & JOSEPH BOYLE: Materialists reject the view that a human can loose their Person-hood yet be bodily alive. There are basic goods necessary for life, including knowledge of the truth, play, and health. They reject euthanasia because attributes of Person-hood are not a hierarchy, so dignity cannot come at the expense of life.
      - DANIEL MAGUIRE: Proportionalists believe that life is a basic but not an absolute good. Life should be respected, but no one should be forced to prolong it. In response to Christianity, Maguire argues that God is not a benevolent dictator - we are allowed to intervene to save life, so we should be allowed to intervene to achieve a good death. Decisions that evaluate the socio-cultural circumstances, and ethical frameworks, allow for euthanasia to become a legitimate moral choice.
      - PETER SINGER: Rethinking Life and Death (1994)'s new ethic: people should 1) recognize that the worth of human life varies, 2) take responsibility for the consequences of their actions, 3) do not discriminate on the basis of species.

      - A patient's life happiness cannot be mathematically calculated. This assessment method is paternalistic as the Doctor makes all the decisions.
      - PETER SINGER: Traditional Sanctity of Life ethic must be overturned because people widely accept that low quality of life can justify euthanasia. It is acceptable for others to judge whether your quality of life is worthwhile, if the individual is unable to do so for themselves.
