- - - - In Virginia, most farmers did not teach their slaves to read and write. Some learned on their own, but for those on small farms where the master’s family was usually not well educated, there was little opportunity.
        
        Cornmeal and salted fish were the common rations of the enslaved populous, of which, they made themselves.
        
        Mount Vernon’s enslaved people had no choice but to wear clothing identifying them as slaves.
    - - Children of a slave were immediately added to the slave total, as previously mentioned, they made up most of the slave population.
        
        On larger plantations, such as this location in Virginia, where there were many slaves, slaves often lived in small cabins in a slave quarter, far from the owner's house, but able to be watched by an overseer.
        
        Families were often separated to different farms due to their work assignments, however on Sundays or Holidays, they were able to see them.
        
        Field harvesters toiled from sunrise to sunset, 14-hour days in the summer. They planted and harvested Mount Vernon’s major cash crops—first tobacco and later wheat—as well as corn, and vegetables. Most field workers were women, men were likely to be trained in a trade of some sort.
