Slavery in the New World
Slavery at Monticello
Conditions at Monticello were poor for slaves, but much better than other plantations.
Originally, slaves were housed in barracks. But, eventually, it was changed to family housing
-
Slaves at Monticello typically received one peck (~2 gallons) of corn meal, one pound of pork, and 2-3 salted fish per week
-
Jefferson employed a overseer named Gabriel Lilly, who was notorious for his irregularly cruel treatment of slaves
-
Jefferson once punished a slave for fighting by selling him far away, so it would seem that he was killed

The strongest salves were used for the most grueling tasks like planting, manuring, and cane-cutting
-
The slaves would have crazy rules for example on the first offense they will be whipped. The second offense is when they will get whipped, nose split and burnt in the face with a hot iron.
-
When the slaves got hungry they would most likely eat bugs that they came across while in the field.
In 1682 the slave owners were required to provide land for crops instead of having their food imported from North America.
Many slaves would die due to a drought because of the drought the crops that the slave owners had planted would die making the slaves stave to death while they were still working.
Many of the slaves would work bare footed. The men would be wearing leaves on their feet if they wanted it but shoes were not provided in the annual clothing allowance.
