Lecture 4: Climate change
The green house effect
see notes on slide for more detail
more green house gas warms the climate
Carbon cycle: the continuous transfer of carbon between air, water, rock and soil
The IPCC: The leading body for the assessment of climate change
Anthropogenic effect: IPCC Concluded that 95% probability that humans are responsible for climate warming
Evidence:
Ice cores
Atmospheric Greenhouse gases
The 1998 Myth
Skeptics misuse/misunderstanding of data
Glacial retreat
Arctic sea ice depletion
The great arctic land grab: Countries are trying to grab land for oil and gas mining
Droughts
Food threat: lower crop yeailds raies prices
Human security: migration, wars, conflicts among cities
Sea level and temperature rise
0.25 to 1m higher by the end of the century
In general
Temperature: the world will be warmer by 2-4 degrees in this century. The Arctic is warming at twice the global rate and this is irreversible
Precipitation: In short, wet areas will generally be wetter and dry areas drier.
More severe events and they will be longer.
