American born Chinese, Jing wang (China town (San francisco), English,…

Jing wang
-
-
-
very calm, quiet, conservative, polite
In the beginning, Jing wang acts very shy and kind of secretive in the novel. I think this because he doesn't really interact a lot with other people and we still don't know a lot about him. But once we start reading more about him we can tell than he just wants to be like everyone else. An example of this is on page 98 when he gets a perm to look more "american" and so that his crush likes him.
Chin-kee
-
-
-
- He acts what is considered a stereotypical Chinese person.
- He has a lot of energy.
- Gets Excited very fast
He is seen as a very annoying person to be around and makes comments that aren't the best when it comes behavior-wise but i think he behaves like this because he is very excited. He is also very knew to how people in America behave and doesn't really know how to act with the people in Danny's school.
Monkey King
-
Anger problems, His emotions change a lot, Agressiv
Joining the specials parties and being treated like a human. Being Recognized as an important leader and for that he thinks he has to be a Monkey and has to be accepted by everyone but in a way this also shows some type of weakness.
Danny
-
At the beginning of the story, he behaves like any other teenager but once his cousin Chin-Kee visits we learn something very personal and knew about him. Apparently every year when Chin-Kee visits he embarrasses Danny and after that people make fun of Danny and that's why he switched schools every year. This is something we didn't know about Danny and before that, I just judged him for not liking Chin-Kee but now I feel like I can understand why he is behaving like that and why he is so cold toward his cousin.
I think Danny is interested in basketball and also having a good experience in school and this might be a little hard for him because every year he has to change school and this might affect his social life but at the end he always finds a ways to get what he wants even if it will only last for a short amount of time.
Melanie
Melanie is American and probably lives near Danny's house because they go to the same school and she has even gone studying with him after school.
Melanie seems to be a kind sweet girl that is just trying to have a fun experience during the years of high-school with no drama and no compromises. one option i think is that she actually likes Danny and wants to go out with him but maybe she just doesn't want to be part of the drama but an other option i have which is the one that makes the most sense is that she just doesn't like Danny that way.
I think Melanie is interested in having a normal teenager life, having friends, going out and having lots of fun but also get good grades and be very organized with school work.
CONNECTION
These three stories have very different scenarios but have a few things in common. They are very similar because they are all from different places in the story and have many differences between the American culture that they are not used to. This makes them want to change so that they can fit in with what society wants and so that the are accepted and liked.
