Unit 1 Themes
Location/Geography
The low country is on the coast and is very wealthy. A lot more land then the upcountry. This makes them able to have more resources.
Gullah is part of geography. It's the shared language/culture of slaves. It helps them speak without their owners knowing what they are saying.
The upcountry is bigger then the low country, but is less wealthy. Less money, less land, less resources.

Global connections
The middle passage was a route that transported slaves. It went across the Atlantic ocean to Africa.
Mercantilism is when the head colony get's more money then it is selling from the other colonies. Example: There is the corporate colony that is in charge of everything and there are other little colonies around the big one that's doing the work but gets no credit.
The triangle trade was a trade route that traded materials and slaves. It was connected to Africa, England, and the Americas.

Conflict and Change
European settlers needed others to do their jobs in harvesting. Europeans picked Native Americans at first to do the job then Africans.

European settlers wanted religious freedom so they went to America. In America you could practice any type of religion.
When slaves were being transported they were travelling on ships. The ships were crowded and extremely hot, there was no space.
Power/Authority
Europeans treated Africans different because of their color. Europeans separated themselves from Africans because of this.
Africans couldn't be treated the same as Europeans because they were a different race. Africans couldn't have freedom.
Slave owners have full power over their slaves. They make them work all day, and don't listen to them.
