Characteristics of virus
:<3: Have 124,000 base pair (bp) to more than 126,000 bp
-
-
:<3: A linear double-stranded DNA molecule made up of two segments (L and S) that joined covalently.
:<3: Each segment comprises a unique sequence (100,000 bp in L, 5,232 bp in S) flanked by a large (7319.5 bp, in S) or small (88.5 bp, in L) inverted repeat.

Immunology Aspect
How vaccine is given?
- Vaccine is given by injection under the skin (subcutaneously) of the upper arm
- Given as two doses, separated by at least six weeks.
- Does not produce maximum immunity against chickenpox infection until about six weeks after the second dose

How does Varilrix works?
- By provoking the body's immune response to this virus, without actually causing the disease.
- When the body is exposed to foreign organisms, immune system produces antibodies against them
- Help the body recognise and kill the foreign organisms
- Remain in the body to help protect the body against future infections with the same organism (active immunity)
- Antibodies produced remain in the body so that if the organism is encountered naturally, the immune system can recognise it and attack it, thus preventing it from causing disease.

Immunisation schedule
- First injection at 12-15 months old
- Booster shot at 2-6 years old
- At age 6-13 years old that haven’t encounter chicken pox, were given 2 doses 3 months apart
- At age 13 years old above, that haven’t encountered chicken pox were given 2 doses 1-2 months apart
Possible risks
- Tenderness and redness where shot were given, fever tiredness and varicella-like illness
- Rash can happen after 1 month of injection
- Very small risk of febrile seizures
