Silk Roads - Aish Mistry
Samarkand: Located in the Zerafshan River Valley in Central Asia. One of the oldest and most important cities on the trade routes. Had an abundance of natural resources. Sogdians colonies were located there. They reached areas as far as China and traded precious metals, spices, and cloth.
Kashgar: Major trading city and an oasis city in western China. Major trading post for China, the Middle East, and Europe. Many caravans on camels passed through here and they were transporting silk, spices, gold, and gemstones.
Bills of Exchange: This is a written order (like a check) for someone to make a payment to a specific person. This allowed for payments to be made without carrying coins in bulk across long distances.
Banking Houses: Merchants would put their money in these banks (which would keep their money safe) and then they would get a bill of credit in order to purchase goods outside the local economy.
Paper Money: The Chinese created paper money because the amount of coins needed to make large purchases was difficult and dangerous to carry across vast distances
