I like this quote because in Chapter 1, it says, "She understood then what Nana meant, that a harami was an unwanted thing; that she, Mariam, was an illegitimate person who would never have a legitimate claim to the things other people had, things such as love, family, home, acceptance." (Hosseini 4) By the end of Mariam's story, she was able to accept her fate because she knew that she was finally able to feel loved and have a family. Laila and her children were Mariam's family and Mariam believed that she had lived a fulfilling life because of them. This is what made Mariam willing to sacrifice herself to save them; she loved them.
