Final Thoughts
Do you think that the way Miriam's judge show her compassion, is unusual?
I didn't really like the book until the very end. It was really slow at the beginning and during the middle of the novel, I didn't like the content, it was depressing and upsetting to me.
How do you think Nana affected Miriam, to influence her life choices?
In chapter 29, how does Rasheed justify marrying Laila?

-
“ And in this fleeting, worthless change with Mariam, Layla knew that they were not enemies any longer.”(Hosseini 224)

Quotes
"They knew better than to get any closer than thirty yards, even though the Nana's aim was poor and most of the rocks landed well short of their targets … She cursed their mothers, made hateful faces at them. The boys never returned the insults." Chapter 3, page 14
This quote displays that even though they are children, Nana still is repulsed by them because they are Jalil’s children. Also, it shows that she has no compassion to anything related to Jalil, even if they or it has done nothing to her.
""A weed' Nana said. 'Something that you rip out and toss aside'"
Chapter 2, page 8.
This sentence said to Mariam by her mother, should have been left unsaid because as a child, Mariam should have been left in the dark about her mothers' feeling toward her father. It will end up leaving a mark on Mariam later on in the book.
"Afsoon escorted her back to the room upstairs. When Afsoon closed the door, Mariam heard the rattling of a key as a turn in the lock."
Chapter 7, page 46
This shows that Jalil and his wives knew that Mariam did not want to be married. They knew that she wanted to run away, to get away from the situation. It is also kind of symbolic, the wives locking her in a room, like they locked her away from society because they think that she is a disgrace to their family.
Quotes
“He shoved two fingers into her mouth and pried it open, then forced the cold, hard pebbles into it.”
chapter 15 page 94
This is disgusting, he is punishing Miriam for something she can't control. She could not control the outcome of any other pregnancies, so she should not have gotten abused and neglected by her husband.
-
“‘Keep him away from me.’ That was the only time Mammy said anything all morning.”
Chapter 19 page 124
The mother of Layla has some sort of illness, most likely depression. she is not acting like a mother towards Layla, and only loves the two sons, she has lost. I'm also certain that she doesn't even love her husband because she blames him for the loss of her sons.
Questions
-
-
why doesn't Laila's mother care for her enough to stay alive for her/ She wanted to stay alive for Laila's brothers.
Quotes
“ And when the Rockets began to rain down on Kabul, people ran for cover. Mammy did too, literally. She changed into black again, went to her room, shut the curtains, and pulled the blanket over her head.”
(Hosseini 155)
this quote shows how Laila's mom didn't really care for Laila, because once the “ Rockets began to rain down on Kabul” she ran away. She didn't care about the safety of her last born or her husband she just remembered that her two sons were dead.
“As much as I love
this land, some days I
think about leaving it,”
(Hosseini 135)
I think that this quote is significant to the text because even though he wants to leave he still stays behind for his wife. Even through all of the fights and Lowe's they have been through because of her mental illness.

Questions
-
When Babi tried to convince Mammy to leave she said "You go, then. Take your daughter and run away." why didn't she say our daughter?
why did Mammy think that she could just get out of bed one day, act like nothing happen and talk to Laila like she did? (146)
Quotes
“Won't you, Mariam? And if you fancy something, I will get it for you. You see that is the sort of husband I am.” (Hosseini 200)
This quote is important because
it shows how Rasheed thinks of
Mariam. He thinks of her as
someone he can use for his
work, to take the workload off of him.
He thinks of her more like a slave,
than a wife.
``Did you know that he used to drink sharab back then, that he was crying drunk that day? it's true. crying drunk, it's what I heard. and that was mid-morning. by noon, he was passed out on a lounge chair. you could have fired the noon cannon next to his ear and he wouldn't have batted an eyelash.’ (Hosseini 204)
This is important to the plot, the storyline. It gives information about how his son died, and the mental state he was in. He was still grieving from his wife's passing, which led to his son's death.
“ And in this fleeting, worthless
change with Mariam, Layla knew
that they were not enemies any longer.”(Hosseini 224)
This quote shows the growth throughout
the plot. It shows that Laila and Mariam
have gotten over there issues with each
other, and have joined together as a
force against Rasheed.
Questions
Were the women creeped out when Rasheed talked about the bad things that he would do to people, or when he would call them weird names like when he called Laila his little flower?
Why was Miriam so upset at Laila for "stealing her husband," when she didn't like nor loved her husband anyway?
In chapter 31,
why did Rasheed
talk so ill of Miriam?
Quotes
-
‘I swear you're going to
make me kill you, Laila,’
he said, panting. Then he
stormed out of the house.”
(Hosseini 272)
I think that the author put this
he said dialogue in the novel for
foreshadowing. It foreshadows the
upcoming event that leads to
Rasheed’s death.

Why didn't Miriam
receive word of her father's

left something for her?
