A Thousand Splendid Suns
quotes and reflections
(chapter 7 page 44) "Now he is a little older than you, afsoon chimed in."but he can't be more than...forty. forty five at the most wouldn't you say nargris?"
they really didn't care about marium, they just wanted her out. between the akward conversation and of corse the fact that shes a hairam they just took any opritunity they could to send her out of thehouse for good. previously in the chapters you can see them trying to make conversation whilst also giving a sort of back handed complement here and there but they really didn't car for her and just wanted her out asap.
(chapter 7 page 46) "then jalil did, in a thin, threadbare voice. "god damn it marium, don't do this to me."
Jalil is saying this as if he is the one thats mother passed away and is being treated like an animal. marium is starting to see jalils true colors. she thought this man was an amazing loving person who wanted that best for her, but bow she realized how much he is embarased by her and how much he wants her gone.
(chapter 3 page 14) "nana yelled at the boys as she carried bags of rice inside and called them names marium didn't understand. she cursed their mother, made hateful faces at them. the boys never returned the insults"
Most people look down on marium and nana but why were the boys so silent when she was saying all these mean things? nana had a kid before marrige and the kid is considered a hairam so that alone should be enough to be made fun of. they also were sent away on a clearing to be avoided at all costs but some of the only people that frequently visited them still did not chose to "fight back" but instead to get their job done and move on.

questions

- (ch 11 pg 48)"You'll get used to it," Rasheed said. "With time, I bet you'll even like it."
- (ch 11 pg 49)"I don't see any chickens," Mariam said. "That's the one thing you can't find on Chicken Street." Rasheed laughed
reflections
- one big thing she noticed was that Kabul was far more advanced than Herat
- this was a new experiece for Marium. she was not used to wearing a burqa. she wasn't used to going out in town. she wasn't used to going into a restraunt. this was a very new experience and it was happening all so quickly.
- they seemed like they were warming up to eachother, they seemed like they started to get along, he was getting her stuff, complementing her, smiling at her and she didn't mind.
chapter 21-30
quotes
- chapter 25 "and here was tariq now, sitting beside Lailia on the couch, looking at the ground, hands between knees. syaing that he was leaving. not the neiborhood. not Kabul. but Afghanustan alltogether. leaving." (Hosseini 180)
- (Hoesseini page 179) "Giti is dead. blown to pieces"
-
reflections
- the single leaving really emphisized how another person that she loved is leaving her. tairq was her life, who she loves, and her bestfriend. now she wont have that. she was pretty selfish when she stared hitting him but i think she knew that this would be a good thing
- these are Lailia's thoughts as she was trying to accept the fact that her last friend was dead. she had been hit by a rocket and killed.

ch 31-40
reflections
she had been rejected all her life and finaly Marrium would move into the city and forget her past. 20 years later she is still being reminded of her past and how she was frogotten, but this time it was by the man who she took care uf, and the man who loved her and used her.
you don't want your wife to be sturdy, you want a bed or a truck to be sturdy. this is the only complement that he can find to give her. in the later sentences he compares layla to a benz and marrium is a volga. he dosent even want her he compares he to bad cars and he wasnt mean to laila, he liked laila way more than marium.
finnally someone was nice to marrium but she was so used to someone being mean to her that she didnt see how laila was trying to be nice. so far laila hasnt been mean, but im pretty sure that marium is jealous of her.
quotes
(chapter 31 page 136)" We are city people, you and I, but she is dehati. A village girl. Not even a village girl. No. She grew up in a kolba made of mud outside the village".
(chapter 31 page 136) "But she is not without qualities, all things considered. You will see for yourself, Laila jan. She is sturdy"
"I won't be your servant," Mariam said. "I won't."
The girl flinched "No. Of course not!"

chapter 41-50
reflections
- abuse was normal in these "relationships" so laila and the others were seeing a new side of him they they were prob going to see a lot unfortunately
- in earlier chapters, he praised how great she was but he is so selfish that no women no matter how new can satisfy him. he thought she was this pure beautiful new gem but then a little while later shes all of a sudden old and used.
- during this time of war the people who had it all a year ago, didnt have anything now becuse of the situation that afganistan was in.

her hair,
