Dynamic Delegation
The spectrum

We can plot each style of delegation across spectrum. Each approach has different pros and cons, but the best delegator are able to flex their styles depending on the situation, the task and who they are delegating to, to get the best result

Intro

We need to delegate in order to get things done, but it can be tricky to get right
When done well, both parties are satisfied and the outcome is often better than what could be achieved alone. Poor delegation leads to a lack of clarity and a breakdown in relationships. Finally, if we choose not to delegate when there is too much to do, we end up feeling stressed and resentful.

Mental releases
Releases activity - in pairs, share your concerns with your partner and see if you can come up with a more helpful mindset to "release" your mental block to delegation
-
When we share our examples of how to reframe our thinking to a mindset that is more helpful, we start to get a picture of what mindset great delegators possess.
-
Why is it a difficult skill? Trust, articulation of end goal, time.
Tricky responses
Even the best delegators can be faced with the occasional difficulty, as the only person we have control over during delegation is ourselves.
-
We can't control the responses we get from another person, but we can control how we handle them.
-
Stretch question - does an emotional response mean we got the delegation wrong? No - only that we may have chosen the wrong tactics to use in this situation.
Mental blocks
Delegation can be really difficult, if it was easy, none of us would be here today trying to learn to be better at it!
Lots of things can get in the way of us delegating effectively, and even the best delegators occasionally have concerns (challenges/fears/worries) and get stuck. It's important to identify what our concerns about delegation might be, and then try to identify alternative better thinking to get over them.
Pair discussion - Recall a time when you had too much to do and not enough time to do it. What stopped you from delegating or made it hard for you to delegate? What were your concerns?
Tactics to delegation
Once we've decided where on the spectrum we want to delegate, we need to consider practically how to do it. There are a whole host of tool we can use and employ at any time - the key is the pick the right ones for the situation, task and person
