Formation
-
Pressure build up inside the earth
When released as a result of plate movement, magma explodes to surface

Hazards
Lava flow
- Rare deaths
- High temp causes fires
- Encases everything in rock
Pyroclastic flow
- Mixture of ash, volcanic, gas, rocks, lava
- 200-700ºC
- Associated with explosive eruptions
- Fast-speed <50mph
- Travels max 10 miles destroying everything in its path
- Causes fires floods, debris & deaths
Debris flow
- Mixture of debris flow down a volcano
- Lahars are fast moving debris flows ( mostly water)
- serious damage to river valleys
Ash clouds
- Occur during violent explosions
- Block sun
- Disrupted air travel
- Roof colapse
- Low visibility
- Acid coating ( irritating eyes lungs)
- Contaminated water
- Increase chance of lahar supply
Gases
- Deadly
- Mostly water vapour, but also carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, fluorine, hydrogen fluoride
These gases are deadly
-
Prediction
- Many small earthquakes prior
