Reflections
The quote from page 4 makes me feel pity for Mariam because she is called a bastard when it wasn't her fault that she was born from two people who weren't married
The quote from page 7 shows how women were not treated with respect and shows how society is where they live at
The quote from page 55 is very meaningful because Mariam looked up to her dad in so many ways but when she saw how he betrayed her she could never look at him the same
Quotes
“Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman.” (chapter 1, page 7)
“I used to worship you . . . On Thursdays, I sat for hours waiting for you . . . I thought about you all the time . . . I didn’t know you were ashamed of me.” (chapter 8, page 54-55)
“Nor was she old enough to appreciate the injustice, to see that it is the creators of the harami who are culpable, not the harami, whose only sin is being born.” (chapter 1, page 4)
Chapters 11-20
Reflections
From the quote from page 84 shows that Mariam is a little disturbed of how much it looks like Rasheed is holding and controlling his old wife.
The quote from page 98 shows that Mariam is afraid in her marriage and takes a lot because she feels like she can't do anything but try to please him.
The quote from page 114 contrasts the different types of fathers in Iran. Laila's father really cares about her and her education while Mariam's father sent her off to get married at 15.
-
Quotes
"There was something vaguely unsettling about the way Rasheed seemed to loom over the woman." (Chapter 12, page 84)
"Marriage can wait, education cannot. You’re a very, very bright girl. Truly, you are. You can be anything you want, Laila. I know this about you." (Chapter 16, page 114)
"But after four years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a woman could tolerate when she was afraid." (Chapter 15, page 98)
Chapters 21-30
Reflections
From page 219, it is important because she never knew the way Mammy felt when she was grieving. Now that Tariq is dead she truly feels what it's like to lose someone you truly love.
The quote from page 219 shows that since Tariq is dead she will always have a part of him with that baby . She is hopeful that this baby will make her feel like she still has her old life.
The quote from page 166 is significant because Hasina says hopeful things about both Laila and Giti. Little did they know that Giti would die soon and that Laila's life would fall apart.
-
Quotes
"She hadn’t understood the awfulness of her mother’s loss. Now another stranger bringing news of another death. Now she was the one sitting on the chair." (Hosseini 210)
"A part of Tariq still alive inside her, sprouting tiny arms, growing translucent hands. How could she jeopardize the only thing she had left of him, of her old life?" (Hosseini 219)
"Hasina used to say, “Giti and I, we’ll have pushed out four, five kids each. But you, Laila, you’ll make us two dummies proud. You’re going to be somebody." (Hosseini 166)
Chapter 31-40
Reflections
The second quote is important because Aziza made her feel different from anyone who she ever met. Aziza loved Mariam with pure love that a baby can not fake.
The last quote shows that Laila could not bring herself to kill her unborn baby. This means that she realized that she loved Aziza and could never blame a baby for being made.
The quote from page is special because Laila looks at Mariam in a way she never did. She saw her in an understanding way and could see the hard times Mariam went through.
-
Quotes
" And she marveled at how, after all these years of rattling loose, she had found in this little creature the first true connection in her life of false, failed connections." (Hosseini 252)
"Laila dropped the spoke because she could not accept what the Mujahideen readily had: that sometimes in war innocent life had to be taken. Her war was against Rasheed. The baby was blameless." (Hosseini 284)
"And, for the first time, it was not an adversary’s face Laila saw but a face of grievances unspoken, burdens gone unprotested, a destiny submitted to and endured." (Hosseini 249)
Chapter 41-51
Reflections
The second quote is very significant because it is the last thoughts of Mariam before she is killed. She is quite proud of ow far she has come and knowing what love was.
In the quote from page 414, Laila references a thousand suns and relates it to Mariam. Laila makes a point that Mariam will always be a huge part of her heart.
The quote from page 309 is important because Mariam speaks of forgiving her father, then later, we realize later that in the letter Jalil begs for her to forgive him even though she never reads it.
-
Quotes
"She thought of her entry into this world, the harami daughter of a lowly villager, an unintended thing, a pitiable, regrettable accident. A weed. And yet she was leaving the world as a woman who had loved and been loved back." (Hosseini 370)
" But, mostly, Mariam is in Laila's own heart, where she shines with the bursting radiance of a thousand suns." (Hosseini 414)
"Mariam regretted her foolish, youthful pride now. She wished now that she had let him in. what would have been the harm to let him in, sit with him, let him say what he’d come to say? He was her father." (Hosseini 309)
Final Thoughts
Reflection
A Thousand Splendid Suns was one of the best books I have ever read. It makes you feel so much emotions and mostly scared and sorry for Mariam and Laila because not the way women are treated. Even though Mariam dies the ending was still happy and a relief that things got better.
Quotes
"Mariem steadied her feet and tightened her grip around the shovel's handle. She raised it. She said his name. She wanted him to see." (Hosseini 348)
"Mariam had never before been wanted like this. Love had never been declared to her so guilelessly so unreservedly." (Hosseini 252)
"She remembers Mammy's response to Babi when he would suggest that they leave Afghanistan. I want to see my sons' dreams come true. I want to be there when it happens, when Afghanistan is free, so the boys see it too. They'll see it through my eyes." (Hosseini 389)
Question
In what way is Mariam and Laila's relationship like mother-daughter and how do you think their relationships with their own mothers shaped how they treat each other?
Why would people risk the Taliban’s violence to watch the Titanic and why do you think it was so popular?
