Interview Based Research
Critical Decision Method
Used in many occupational/industrial settings,
often to investigate accidents or incidents.
-
Learning from specific, non-routine events that challenge a person’s expertise
-
Advantages
-
Widely applicable to many fields; if there are experts, critical decisions will have been previously made, even if they aren’t quite as exciting as a police chief at a crime scene
-
Helps to identify specific cognitive elements essential to success in specific fields and in general
Identifies realistic task events in real world settings, so the data is valid and meaningful
-
Disadvantages
-
-
-
-
-
-
Events are subject to error based upon biases/preferences as well as the accuracy of the memory of respondents when the events are collected
Possibility of overgeneralizing from or ascribing too much importance to trivial events (not critical to the job) that have been identified
