Background information
How bones form, grow, and remodel
Appositional growth is the increase in the diameter of bones by the addition of bone tissue at the surface of bones.

Stages of bone healing
The inflammatory phase
Blood vessels torn by the fracture release blood. This blood starts to clot and forms a fracture hematoma.
The repairing phase
Blood vessels torn by the fracture release blood. This blood starts to clot and forms a fracture hematoma
Tissue grows until the two ends meet. These growths are known as calluses, and their purpose is to stabilize the fracture.
