A Thousand Splendid Suns
Chapter 10
3 Quotes
"Mariam had never before touched a car. She ran her fingers along the hood of Jalil's car, which was black, shiny, with glittering wheels in which Mariam saw a flattened, widened version of herself. The seats were made of white leather. Behind the steering wheel, Mariam saw round glass panels with needles behind them."(Page 32, Chapter 5)
"...But she wasn't fast enough. Mariam saw. A gust of wind blew and parted the drooping branches of the weeping willow like a curtain, and Mariam caught a glimpse of what was beneath the tree: the straight-backed chair, overturned. The rope dropping from a high branch. Nana dangling at the end of it." (Page 36, Chapter 5)
"Nana collapsing suddenly, her body tightening, becoming rigid, her eyes rolling back, her arms and legs shaking as if something were throttling her from the inside, the froth at the corners of her mouth, white, sometimes pink with blood. Then the drowsiness, the frightening disorientation, the incoherent mumbling." (Page 10, Chapter 2)
Reflection: This is quote is one of the most important quotes because Mariam's Nana killed herself only because Mariam left her to go see Jalil. Nana warned Mariam that if she left her she would die, and she Mariam ended up leaving her and she actually died.
Reflection: This shows how Nana clearly has a disability. Later in the book, Mariam is explained to the Nana has to take pills for this incident that happens every now and then. This may be known as a seizer.
Reflection: By showing how amazed Mariam is with seeing a car for the first time and touching a car for the first time in her life just shows how significant this quote is. It shows exactly how Mariam has been living her life for the past 15 years and what she has been exposed to.

" But after 4 years of marriage, Mariam saw clearly how much a women could tolerate when she was afraid. And Mariam was afraid. She lived in fear of his shifting moods, his volatile temperment, his insistence on steering even mundane exchanges down a confrontational path that, on occasion, he would resolve with punches, slaps, kicks, and sometimes try to make amends for with polluted apologies and sometimes not." (Chapter 15, Page 98-99)

Culture: Using the example of Mariam never being in a restaurant, how is Mariam's culture different from our culture?
Theme: How does Rasheed follow through with the theme of shame and the feeling of belonging?
Reflection: This just shows how much Mariam has been exposed to. Just like in the first 10 chapters, Mariam has never seen a car before and now this is the first time she is in a restaurant. It just shows how much different Mariam's culture is compared to ours.
Reflection: In this chapter, Mariam had a miscarriage with her first pregnancy. It really distraught Mariam and especially Rasheed, since he lost his first son also. After this Mariam feels a bunch of guilt for not eating or doing things right through her pregnancy.
Reflection: Ever since Mariam had her miscarriage, Rasheed has been in the worst mood ever and the worst husband to Mariam anyone could have. Rasheed is like this because his first wife died and then not long after his son died and then the miscarriage with Mariam happened plus 5 more miscarriages. At this point, Rasheed has made it clear to Mariam that she can no longer make him happy.

"The previous fall, Tariq's uncle in Ghazni had died of a heart attack, and, a few weeks later, Tariq's father had suffered a heart attack of his own, leaving him frail and tired, prone to anxiety and bouts of depression that overtook him for weeks at a time." (Chapter 22, Page 155)
"The last time Tariq was shooed out of the kitchen, his mother caught Laila stealing a glance at him. Laila's heart jumped, and her eyes fluttered guiltily. She quickly occupied herself with tossing the chopped cucumber into the pitcher of salted, watered-yogurt. But she could sense Tariq's mother watching, her knowing, approving half smile." (Chapter 23, Page 167)
"Your mother, she used to be adventurous then, and...so alive. She was just about the liveliest, happiest person I'd ever met." (Chapter 21, Page 149)
Reflection: This quote is important because it shows how worried one thing can get someone. This could possibly happen to Tariq and that could possibly be something big in the story.
Reflection: This quote shows how much someone can love someone at such a young age. The fact that Laila's heart jumped when Tariq's mother caught her, explains just how much she cares about him.
Reflection: This just shows how much Babi used to love being around Mammy until she got into her dark and bad days. It also show how much a person can change in only a matter of time.

"You try this again and I will find you. I swear on the Prophet's name that I will find you. And if I do, there isn't a court in this godforsaken country that will hold me accountable for what I still do. To Mariam first, then to her, and you last. I"ll make you watch. You understand me? I"ll make you watch." (Chapter 33, Page 243)
"They have three cups of tea while they sit there, and then Aziza awakens and begins to cry. Rasheed yells for Laila to come upstairs and shut her up. That's when "a look passes between Laila and Mariam. An unguarded, knowing look. And in this fleeting, wordless exchange with Mariam, Laila knows that they are not enemies any longer."
"When she was done speaking, her heart was hammering and her mouth felt parched. Mariam had never before spoken in this manner, had never stated her will so forcefully. It ought to have felt exhilarating, but the girl's eyes had teared up and her face was drooping, and what satisfaction Mariam found from this outburst felt meager, somehow illicit." (Chapter 31, Page 226)
3 Questions
Why would a missing spoon trigger such a huge blowup of emotions?
How is it Mariam's fault Laila is withholding sex, and then beats her for his assumption?
Why wouldn't Rasheed bring Mariam to his shop?
Reflection: This quote is significant because it shows how Mariam actually feels when she first starts living with Laila. Mariam likes the way things are around Rasheed's house and she doesn't want that to change. Having screamed at Laila satisfied her on what needs to be done.
Reflection: This quote shows just how threatening Rasheed can be when it comes to certain things. And the fact that he can be saying all of that about his two wives and his daughter just shows what kind of person he can be.
Reflection: This quote is significant because it shows the start of Laila and Mariam's bond together. Just by Laila and Mariam giving each other a look shows how significant this can be.
Chapters 41-51
Why do you think the whole town was obsessed with the Titanic when it came out?
What do you think is causing so much anger out of Rasheed to abuse everyone in his family, including his children?
Why did Tariq just decide to show up at Laila's house?
"At the Kabul River, vendors moved into the parched riverbed. Soon, from the river's sunbaked hollows, it was possible to buy Titanic carpets, and Titanic cloth, from bolts arranged in wheelbarrows. There was Titanic deodorant, Titanic toothpaste, Titanic perfume, Titanic pakora, even Titanic burqas. A particularly persistent beggar began calling himself "Titanic Beggar'" (Chapter 41, Page 303)
Reflection: From this quote, it shows how much the town of Kabul is shown to things. For example, right when the Titanic came out, the whole town was obsessed enough to make merchandise of the whole movie.
"A choking noise came up her throat. Her knees weakened. Laila suddenly wanted, needed, to grope for Mariam's arm,...But she didn't. She didn't dare. She didn't dare move a muscle. She didn't dare breathe, or blink even, for fear that he was nothing but a mirage shimmering in the distance,...Laila stood perfectly still and looked at Tariq until her chest screamed for air and her eyes burned to blink. And, somehow, miraculously, after she took a breath, closed and opened her eyes, he was still standing there. Tariq was still standing there." (Chapter 43, Page 327)
"Aziza's ribs began to push through the skin, and the fat from her cheeks vanished. Her calves thinned, and her complexion turned the color of weak tea. When Mariam picked her up, she could feel her hip bone poking though the taut skin. Zalmai lay around the house, eyes dulled and half closed, or in his father's lap, limp as a rag. He cried himself to sleep, when he could muster the energy, but his sleep was fitful and sporadic." (Chapter 41, Page 306)
Reflection: From this quote it just shows how much Laila has missed Tariq. From her not being able to breath or move shows how surprised she is to see Tariq and causing her to run up to him and hug him.
Reflection: This quote shows how significant Mariam and Laila's situation is. From Laila's children being so skinny and how they are described shows how much food they are consuming. By not consuming a lot of food is causing them to be hungry and lose a lot of weight.
Final Thoughts
3 Quotes
" I know you're still young, but I want you to understand and learn this now...Marriage can wait, education cannot. You're a very, very bright girl. Truly, you are. You can be anything you want, Laila...I know that when this war is over, Afghanistan is going to need you as much as its men, maybe even more. Because a society has no chance of success if its women are uneducated, Laila. No chance."(Chapter 16, Page 103)
"Like a compass needle that always points north, a man's accusing finger always finds a woman. Always. Remember that, Mariam." (Chapter 1, Page 7)
3 Questions
If the book ends in 2002, what do you think happens to Laila and her family in the decade that follows?
Why did Mariam refuse to call witnesses at her trial and why didn't she try to escape with Laila and Tariq?
How does the deep friendship between Mariam and Laila change the way Mariam views the world?
Reflection: From a Thousand Splendid Suns, I didn't really like the book. Some parts were really interesting, but for the most part it was very sad. The parts where Rasheed would abuse his wives and his family, where Laila had to send Aziza away to the "special school", when the terrorists set the bomb off, when Mariam's father sent her away with Rasheed, when Mariam's mother hung herself, and when Mariam had all of her miscarriages, are some examples of some really sad parts in the book. A part that I really liked in the book was when Laila and Mariam started bonding and started getting a long with each other. I thought this was good for Mariam, since she has been alone for so many years.
"She was leaving the world as a women who had loved and been loved back. She was leaving it as a friend, a companion, a guardian. A mother. A person of consequence at last." (Chapter 47, Page 329)
