Natalie Garber A Thousand Splendid Suns
"I'll come to Kabul and see you. We'll-" (Chapter 8 Pg. 55 ) :
I think that telling Miriam this is not going to make her feel any better because she knows he won't . Because she says she doesn't want him to come. Through this we figured out that he actually cares a little bit about Miriam.
"Jami lived over five hundred years ago. He did. I took you there once, to the tree. You were little. You wouldn't remember." (Chapter 1 Pg. 5)
I think that he just says this to Miriam because he wants her to feel like they have a special bond. He wants her to feel like she is cared for and wanted regardless that she is a Harami. So, I think that when he tells her "You wouldn't remember" he is just saying that to cover up the fact that he didn't do anything with her as a baby because she was a Harami"
"I'll die if you go. The jinn will come, and I'll have one of my fits. You'll see, I'll swallow my tongue and die. Don't leave me, Miriam Jo . Please stay. I'll die if you go." (Chapter 5 Pg. 27)
I don't think Miriam took what Nana said seriously. I think she just thought Nana was saying that to keep her safe. Now Miriam has to live with the thought that it was all her fault and really it was because Nana wasn't really a happy person.
“ I’m going to be a mother,” Chapter 13 pg.89
I was surprised to see that she was excited and not nervous because she is so young to be having a baby. I think that Miriam should not have to cook and clean for Rasheed when she is pregnant, I think that he should be doing it himself. I also think that Rasheed should have not kept on talking about how it was going to be a boy because if it was a girl Miriam might have had the fear that he might not like her because of her gender.
“ I thought about it the night we got the news” Chapter 20 pg.144
I think that Mammy should have not said this to laila. It tells Laila that she doesn't really care about how laila would feel if she would die. When she tells laila this she says that she didn't do it only because she wanted her sons to see Afghanistan is going to win the war and become free.
“Off to celebrate Eid with his real family” Chapter 12 pg.79
I feel bad for miriam because she feels like she is getting a small portion of the other kids big celebration. I think Nana should not have said this to Miriam because now all of her life she knows that the way they celebrate is not nearly as good as the way other kids do. Jalil should have stayed and celebrated with miriam longer because she is just like the others and she deserves to feel loved too.
Do you think that Miriam, Rasheed, and Laila are going to stay in Kabul or do you think that they are going to be convinced to leave also? And if they do decide to leave do you think that their trip will be successful or will their situation be similar to what Tariq went through?
Do you think that Rasheed will find out if the baby is really for him or not?
Besides the fact that Mammy wanted to stay in Kabul for her sons why do you think Laila's dad didn't leave Kabul if he knew that the consequences were life threatening ?
I was surprised how long Miriam kept her feelings about this matter in because she knew what he was trying to do. I think that Rasheed was wrong for suddenly giving Laila all his attention, because she is younger and he knows that she will be able to do all the things that Miriam cant do for him. It was also very bold of Laila to walk in and say she wants to marry Rasheed, because she is stealing Miriam husband and is not really concerned with how she will make Miriam feel.
Chapter 29: " It's not your decision .It's hers and mine." (Hosseini 214)
I was very surprised that Laila's parents finally made the decision to move. I think that this was the best thing for them because they knew it was going to get a lot worse. Although they did make the decision to move away from Kabul, they should have made this decision a lot sooner because it just got worse and worse the longer they stayed.
Chapter 26 : "We're leaving Laila. All three of us. We''re leaving Kabul." (Hosseini 188)
I was surprised that Tariq waited this long because I would think he would want to spend as many days with her as he could before he left. I think that Tariq should have waited with her in Kabul. For him to wait that long to tell her something this important I think showed how much he actually cared about Laila because, he knew that they only had limited time together but he didn't want to upset her.
Chapter 25: "A few days.I was going to tell you, Laila, I swear, but I couldn't bring myself to. I knew how upset you'd be."(Hosseini 181)
Did Nana really mean that she was going to die if Miriam left?
Did Miriams brothers an sisters actually like her or did they think of her as a Harami?
Why do you think she didn't try to escape Jalils house knowing she had to get married to someone she didn't know?
Why was Mammy so mean to Babi?
Why is Laila not liked by her parents?
When laila sees jalil's car and asks Babi who it was did he say its none of your business because he knows what happened with miriam's family?
Why does Miriam get a worse beating than Laila after Laila had told Rasheed that it was her idea and that Miriam didnt want to go?
Do you think that Rasheed is going to end up getting caught with all of the illegal things that he is buying for Zalmai?
Why do you think that Laila had this dream about Aziza?
Chapter 36: " We'll leave in half an hour, " (Hosseini 258)
I was shocked at how brave Laila was to actually go through with this. I think that Laila probably should have thought about this before she actually went through with it because the outcome was terrible. I was also very surprised that Miriam agreed to leave with Laila considering the fact that she knows how mean Rasheed is .
Chapter 40: "This is Zalmai's TV," (Hosseini 297)
When all the laws came out restricting women wearing makeup and etc Rasheed was in agreeance and said that Laila and Miriam needed to follow them, but then he got a TV for his son which is against the law. This shows how much Rasheed doesn't care about his wives, but he will go against the law for his son . I think that he is ungrateful because if it wasn't for Laila he wouldn't have a son and Laila went through so much pain to be able to safely deliver her son.
Chapter 36: " I'm so sorry, Mariam, " Laila cried into the glass.(Hosseini 269)
I think that what Rasheed did to Laila, Mariam, and Aziza was wrong. He should have at least taken care of Aziza because she did not choose to leave the house. I also think that it was wrong that Miriam got a worse consequence than Laila because they both did nothing wrong and didn't deserve that.
Do you think Zalmai accepts Tariq as his full father now that he sees that tariq treats him and his mother better than rasheed did?
What do you think would have happened if Miriam would have not killed Rasheed?
If they put Aziza in the orphanage because the money was so short then why didn't they put Zalmai in the orphanage too?
I was surprised that Laila wanted to go all the way back to Herat just to make Miriam happy. I thought this was so nice of Laila because she knew that Miriam would like her to do this. I think Lailas dream that she had about Miriam in the kolba was a sign to show Laila that Miriam appreciated what she had done for her.
Chapter 50: "But first, I want to go to Herat." (Hosseini 390)
I think that Jalil would have been devastated if he were still alive because he would have had to hear the way his daughter died. I think that had he taken her in and treated her well she could have lived a happier life. I was sad that Miriam never got the chance to read this note from Jalil because it showed that he actually cared about her.
Chapter 50: She has passed on, I'm afraid." (Hosseini 396)
I was sad that Aziza had to live separated from her parents. She also had to live in the orphanage knowing that her brother was still at home and that they chose to put her in the orphanage and not him. I think this made her feel unwanted but I think she tried to find light in the situation even though it was a hard time for her.
Chapter 42: " We'll come to see you, Aziza jo, and we'll play together, just like always. It's only for a while, until your father finds work." (Hosseini 315)
Chapter 50: She has passed on, I'm afraid." (Hosseini 396)
Why do you think Rasheed always so mean?
Do you think something happened to Aziza in the orphanage that caused her to feel the way she did?
Why do you think Laila didn't try and find a way for Miriam to go with them after all she did for them ?
Chapter 26 : "We're leaving Laila. All three of us. We''re leaving Kabul." (Hosseini 188)
Chapter 5: "I'll die if you go. The jinn will come, and I'll have one of my fits. You'll see, I'll swallow my tongue and die. Don't leave me, Miriam Jo . Please stay. I'll die if you go." (Hosseini 27)
I liked the book. It was very interesting but If I was looking for a book it probably wouldn't have caught my eye. Overall it was a good book and I think I would be open to reading another one of the authors books.
