        The red lines represent lines of force of gravitational field which are always perpendicular to the equipotentials.
        You can see in this diagram that the equipotentials are parallel to the ground,(horizontal), because at the earths gravitational field is uniform at the surface. So a 1kg mass raised 1m gains 9.8 J of gpe.
      - Potential Gradient: The change of potential per meter at a point in a gravitational field.
        
        Example: At the earths surface the potential changes by 9.8JKg-1 for every meter of height gained, so the potential gradient is 9.81 Jkg-1. The potential gradient decreases the further away you get to the earth.
