Legal Steps Taken by the Government Leading Up to the Civil War
Compromise of 1850
After the Missouri Compromise,
there were more territories that
applied for statehood. Every time
a new state was made, the divide
between the North and the South got
more heated.
Problem
"What to do about slavery in these new lands?"

Solutions
Sept. 9, 1850:
California's appliance for
statehood is accepted.
California is a free state.
Dec. 29, 1845:
Texas' appliance for
statehood is accepted.
Texas is a slave state.
New territories got
to vote on slavery.
"The idea that territories could vote
is called popular sovereignty"

Election of 1860
On November 6, 1860,
the Election of 1860
was held. The four people
and their political party.
Abraham Lincoln:
Republican
Stephen Douglas:
Southern Democratic
John Bell:
Constitutional Whig
John Breckinridge:
Northern Democratic
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was in 1817.
It occurred because Missouri applied for
statehood, but that would disrupt the balance between free and slave states.
11 free states
11 slave states
South:
11 slave states
Did want Missouri to join
North:
11 free states
Did not want Missouri to join
Missouri wanted to become a slave state.
That would disrupt the balance between the
amount of free and slave states.
Maine also wanted to
apply for statehood.
However, Maine wanted
to apply as a free state.
Thee solution was to bring
both Missouri and Maine in
as states. This worked because
there would be one free state
and one slave state. The
balance would still be equal
on both sides.
The Kansas-Nebraska Act:
Stephen Douglas wants to have
a railroad running through the U.S.
states. But to do that, the Kansas
and Nebraska territories must be
organized. To organize the two
territories, the South's support is
needed. There was popular sovereignty
in the plan.
Led to the creation of a new
political party called
the Republicans.
Popular Sovereignty
When civilians are allowed to
vote whether or not they
want slavery in their state.
Popular sovereignty was allowed in Kansas and Nebraska.
Bleeding Kansas
