      - A slave named Dred Scott had an owner that wanted to move him to Illinois. Now, Illinois was a free state. After discussing with the Supreme Court, they decided that if a slave owner and his slave moved, no matter what, he would still be a slave. So technically, in the North's eyes, there was no such thing as a "free state".
