Ernest Lawrence
Ernest Lawrence was born in Canton, South Dakota. He received his degree in Chemistry from the University of South Dakota. He then got his Ph.D. in physics from Yale University. He took a job at the University of California Berkley and focused on nuclear research. His early work was work on ionization phenomena. In 1929 he developed the cyclotron which accelerates particles without the use of high voltages. These cyclotrons were used in the Manhattan Project to develop and research new elements that could potentially fission into a fast reaction. Lawrence built larger and larger cyclotrons to update his research. He wrote about 56 papers in his career. He developed a method for obtaining time intervals to study the discharge of an electric spark. He also devised a method on measuring the charge to mass ratio of an electron.

Uranium 235
Gaseous Diffusion
Take a sample of U-238 and send it through a series of cascading screens . The U-235 would fall through the screens more easily.
-
Gun Barrel Weapon. uses explosives to shoot a ring of uranium down the fuselage of the bomb onto another cylinder of uranium to create critical mass and cause fast fission
