The piano is a stringed instrument.

Its many parts are organized into five general structural and mechanical areas of either grand or vertical pianos.

The piano story begins in the shop of Bartolomeo di Francesco Cristofori (1655-1731), a harpsichord maker, in 1709 in Padua, Italy. A tight, vibrating string can make noise from prehistoric times.

In the ancient world, to amplify the sound, strings were attached and extended over bows, gourds, and boxes; they were fastened by ties, pegs, and pins; and to generate sounds they were plucked, bent, or hit.

Cristofori's new device was first displayed in Florence in 1709 and was called the gravicembalo col piano e forte (about "smooth and loud keyboard tool").

Ultimately, fortepiano or pianoforte was abbreviated, and lastly just piano. His oldest remaining tool dates back to 1720 and is on display at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art.
