Managing Upwards
Intro
-
Great influence, force or authority. Power can be respected or resented, depending on who is perceived to have it, how it is gained and what it is used to achieve.
Power does exist is most relationships, although it is more evident in some than others. One individuals power over another may be dependent on resources, competencies, level of control, influence and needs.
In most situations, the dependency of one person on another is the inversely proportional to power (e.g. more you rely on a boss to provide guidelines, the more power they will have over you during the project - a parent have more control over offspring who live at home, than those who dont)
In orgs, people's desire for power often gives rise to office politics. Usually, the more complex an org is the more politics are present - especially when important decisions need to be made and people are competing for scarce resources
What managers want - it's more about how you do your job, rather than what you do. Soft/Social skills > Technical Skills.
How developed our your soft/social skills in the workplace?
We are going to explore how we can develop stretch or social/soft skills to manage even the trickiest of managers
-
What can you control?
We need to accept what we can or cannot change about the relationship and the things you can influence or control
There are 3 - Direct control, indirect control or no control
-
-
Two things you can control are your effort and your commitment. Trying to understand your boss's expectations and the standards by which your performance is judged can also improve your relationships at work

Power Styles
To help you to identify which power styles you are dealing with and provide you with some additional tactics, we are going to use a "power style" quiz

Who has the power?
One key to managing upwards effectively is to
understand where the power really lies. Once this is understood, we can learn to manage those situations where others have power over us more effectively.
Line up, break into pairs. Complete activity
Your ability to achieve your career and personal goals depends on how you manage those that have power over you
In order to understand how to manage those who have power over us more effectively, we need to empathize with them and learn what makes them tick
Power mindsets
We must understand their motivations, what they respect and admire in others, what frustrates them, what they dislike and their main concerns and worries
Empathize activity - break into pairs. Become the person that has more power over us, and really try to answer the questions from their perspective.
