Inferences
As we can see from the key events, it's a basic introduction to some of the characters of the book, and it is told from the innocent point of view of a child.
This chapter serves as a hint to the future events of the book, especially the mentions and part of Boo Radley. Their interest in him will appear important later.
The geographical setting is placed in a small, gloomy and 'tired ' town, that was still there after the Great Depression. We know that in the rainy weather, the streets turned to red slop.
Key quotes
"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. "
From this narrative, we can tell that Scout is recalling her past, her childhood memories of Maycomb.
"There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County."
Shows the slow pace of the town, and how it was boring and tiring. This hints at the Great Depression, as she says there was nothing to buy, and especially no money to buy things with.
