THE CITY & FOOD
SUPERMARKETS
Lots of plastic packaging is used, adding to the landfill and large amount of plastic waste that we already have
Lots of resources are put into getting the food to the supermarket, as well as keeping the supermarkets up to date
Lots of waste, whether it is food waste or it is plastic waste comes out of supermarkets. As food goes out of date or the fresh food is not at its best quality
There are policies in place where any food that is not up to a particular quality must be remove from the store: those policies are decided on between the seller and the store
Cost of fruits and vegetables are increasing which lowers the demand for them. Fruits and vegetables then get wasted as consumers do not purchase
WASTE
-
Produced but uneaten food occupies almost 1.4 billion hectares of land; representing nearly 30 percent of the world’s agricultural land area.
Beyond its environmental impacts, the direct economic consequences to producers of food wastage (excluding fish and seafood) run about $750 billion annually.
JOBS
FARMERS: As of 2016-17, there are 304,200 people directly employed in Australian agriculture. The complete agricultural supply chain, including the affiliated food and fibre industries, provide over 1.6 million jobs to the Australian economy.
Our Design Fiction aims to provide jobs which involve looking after plants and controlling the new technologies.
SUPERMARKETS: Over the next 5 years, the supermarket and grocery store industry will experience a 1.1% decrease in jobs, as 5.4% of supermarket and grocery businesses will also be decreasing.
FARMING
Advantages
-
-
Lesser costs, higher gains
Disadvantages
weather conditions destroying crops: floods, cyclones, droughts
climate change, effecting weather conditions and temperature
crops can easily be effected by diseases, which will reduce the amount of crops that can be produced yearly, as that lot of land will have to be left for a year to make sure the soil is healthy again
-
pesticides can be used, which is not healthy of humans
Mixing (tilling) of soil releases carbon dioxide, contributes to global warming
-
FOOD SECURITY
Need to have a sufficient amount of food resources that are of good quality and do not lack of nutrients
-
