Describing and Measuring motion
Describing motion
An object is in motion if its distance from another object is changing
Refrence points
A refrence point is a place ot object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion
An object is in motion if it chnages position relative to a refrence point
Relative motion
Is movent at it relates to something else
Measuring distance
All scientists use a measurement system called international system of units
Used to discribe the distance and object moves
Calculating speed
If you know the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time you can calculate the speed of an object
The speed equation
Divide distance by time
Average speed calulation
Total distance traveled my total time traveled
Instantaneous speed
Current object movement by instant time
Describing velocity
When you know both the speed and direction of an objects motion you know the velocity
A given direction is called velocity
Graphing motion
You can show the motion of an object on a line graph in which you plot distance versus time
Calculating slope
Rise divided by run
Different slopes
