GSM Entities (Function)
BTS (Base Transceiver Station)
Transmission function: which manage the transfer of traffic and control data between the BTS and BSC
Telecommunication functions: which manage the transfer of traffic and control data betwwen the BTS and Mobile Station
O&M Function: which supervise the operation of the BTS
Support Function: which provides a logical and physical and environment in which the BTS functions can be realized
BSC (Base Station Controller)
A BSC works with a mobile switching center (MSC) that is external to the BTS, enabling it to provide full mobile telephony and fulfill capacity requirements
Base stations must communicate with the MSC and data must be managed as information overflow, impacting MSC efficience
A BSC eliminates MSC base station activity management requirements, allowing the MSC to handle critical tasks, such as traffic balancing and database management
MSC (Mobile Switching Center)
The MSC is mostly associated with communications switching functions, such as call set-up, release, and routing
A mobile switching center (MSC) is the centerpiece of a network switching subsystem (NSS)
The MSC is structured so that base stations connect to it,while it connects to the PSTM
Because cell phones connect to these base stations, all forms of communication, whether between two cell phones or between a cell phone and a landline telephone, travel through the MSC
Gateway Mobile Switching Centre (GMSC)
is a special kind of MSC that is used to route calls outside the mobile network.
Whenever a call for a mobile subscriber comes from outside the mobile network, or the subscriber wants to make a call to somebody outside the mobile network the call is routed through the GMSC
GMSC is just a function that can be part of a MSC.
The SMS GMSC is a getaway MSC that can also receive short message.
