POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE
DEFINITION
Genetic hereditary disorder whereby cysts form in or both kidneys
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
Usually both kidneys are affected
The normal functioning of the kidney gets destroyed
The kidney substance gets destroyed
This results to renal failure
Numerous cysts develop in the kidney
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
Proteinuria
Haematuria
Kidneys palpable as a hard mass
Hypertension
Distended abdomen
Flank pain
Moth-eaten appearance of the kidney because of invading cysts on radiologic studies
MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
Nephrectomy
Kidney transplant
Dialysis
DIET THERAPY
Take graham bread instead of white bread
Take natural raw sea salt instead of table salt
Replace sugar with 100% natural raw honey
Avoid intake of proteins such as eggs, meat etc.
Replace tap water with fresh orange juice.
CAUSES
Numerous kidney disorders
Family history of polycystic kidney disease
DIAGNOSTIC STUDIES
Presence of blood and proteins on the urine
Blood tests to check for the function of the kidneys
Ultrasound scan for kidneys
CT scan and MRI scan
HEALTH EDUCATION
Avoid contact sports eg rugby that may cause injury
Control blood pressure to slow progression of the disease
Avoid consumption of anti-inflammatory painkillers
Stop consumption of alcohol beverages
Avoid high consumption of salt
Refer family members to screen for the disease.
