phonemic awareness pre-assessment, lesson: rhyming words
5 students who answered most
Think pair share:
Students create small groups or get a partner. When they hear the word/see the flashcard of a word. They then will tell their partner a rhyming word of the displayed word in a sentence. Then everyone will hear a sound that signals its time for the new word. When the new word is shown, students will switch the roles and repeat the exercise with their partner.
student demonstrations/discussions
This would be structured similar to a game. On 3 large cubes, I would put a different rhyming word we had studied on each side, each cube representing a rhyming word family. One student would roll the cubes and whatever words they land on should make a short story, using those 3 words together.
game activities
in the activity corner area, students will have varying activities, designed to challenge their particular level. For the students who displayed a high understanding, this is an example of the type of game they will be able to participate in.
12 students who have some knowledge
4 corners
This game will use the 4 corners of the room to go to for the rhyming word. After the pre-assessment I will be able to see who understands the topic. The students who have displayed some knowledge will have a chance to show the extent of their knowledge by playing this game. First, a flashcard will be displayed in the middle of the room, there will then be four corners with different rhyming words on display. When the flashcard in the middle of the room changes, then the students will run to the rhyming word of the flashcard in the middle of the room. The middle flashcard will rotate and I will be able to see which children understand the game and the word that is rhyming.
student interviews
Each day when students get their daily diaries to take home, I ask them a question about our lesson. During this time I will ask them to identify a rhyming word of a common vocabulary word that we have studied and then give them the diary.
game activities
in the activity corner area, students will have varying activities, designed to challenge their particular level. For the students who displayed a general understanding, this is an example of the type of game they will be able to participate in.
5 students who have limited knowledge
yes/no cards (modified to be a happy face or frown face)
This activity will be played as a class. Students will receive a happy face/ frowning face sign that they can flip back and forth to. I will have a flashcard on the board of a word like 'cat' then I will use verbal and written English to ask if the following word is a rhyming word of cat. I will be able to gauge understanding and participation by seeing who can hold up their face of yes or no cards accordingly.
teacher observation/game activities
in the activity corner area, students will have varying activities, designed to challenge their particular level. For the students who displayed a below average understanding, this is an example of the type of game they will be able to participate in, such as coloring in all the -an words instead of focusing on 3-4 letter words. I will observe where difficulties arise for these students and try to focus in on these areas to help them understand the more complex word structures
portfolio analysis
I would analyze past work of the student and see where the student began to have difficulty in the phonemic process when using rhyming words. The portfolios would also include teacher comments and observations from years past that I could reference, as well.
