ACUTE GLOMERULONEPHRITIS
DEFINITION
group of diseases in which there is inflammation and damage of renal glomeruli
primarily a disease of children older than 2 years
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
antigen-antibody complexes become trapped
inflammatory response occurs
occurs as a result of antigen-antibody reaction
resulting in the damage of the glomerulus
NURSING MANAGEMENT
prevent complications related to bed rest
oedematous areas should be kept dry and clean
Bed rest until the signs of inflammation are resloved
monitoring of weight gain daily
monitor and record intake and output
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES
blood test including cultures may show elevatec creatinine
Throat swabs and blood cultures to determine infection
routine laboratory urine test
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMPS
proteinuria
retention of waste products
Haematuria
dull bilateral flank pain
headache
RELATED PHARMACOTHERAPY
corticosteriods may be prescribed
plasmaperisis and dialysis to prevent uraemic complications
administer diuretics e.g hydroclorothiazide
DIET
dietary proteins should be restricted
high calorie diet should be given
sodium restricted diet
